History of the Scottish Grand National

The first ever Scottish Grand National Race began over 125 years ago hand is been held in Ayr since the closer of the Bogside course in 1966. This is one of the most prestigious and exciting Jump horse racing events north of the boarder and each year some of the most to quality horses from around Scotland, England and Ireland take part.

The Scottish Grand National is 4 miles and 1 furlong long and there have been lots of really close finishes throughout the years. One of the most recent spectacular finishes of all time was said to be in 2005, when 20/1 shot Joe’s Edge who was being ridden by Keith Mercer jumped over the final fence in the lead only to be overtaken by a head by Cornish Rebel who was being ridden by ruby Walsh, before retaking the lead an winning the £70,000 pounds prize. In 1974 the superb Red Rum won both the Sottish Grand National and the English Grand National at Anitree, and is a record that has still not been beaten to date.

The ground at the Ayr Racecourse is generally flat, and racing on this ground tends to be quite firm and in terms of weight, four of the last nine winners carried weight over 11 stone and during that same period only 10% of the runners have been over 11 stone in weight.
