Joe Calzague, 35 unified the Super Middleweight belts last night adding the WBL and WBA belts to his own WBO Crown and this was his 21st successful defense of his own WBO title, Joe Calzague won a hard fought unanimous points victory.
The Explosive Welshman beat the Dane Mikkel Kessler to remain unbeaten in an amazing 44 contests and he has now been World Champion for more than 10 years. Mikkel Kessler, 28 had won his previous 39 contests and these included 29 knockout wins.
Kessler stared the fight of well and his jab was very effective in the opening two rounds and when Calzague was showboating in the 2nd round he was hit by a sting right hand from Kessler. Kessler kept his cool and he was showing Joe that he was not going to let his two title belts go without a fight, Calzague was more successful in the fourth round and he started to take some risks that have always payed off for him in the past, the Dane was not put off and he came out into the nest round with all guns blazing and lapping up the electric atmosphere. As the fight wore on Calzague dropped the showboating and got into a smoothness and accuracy with his boxing and was not really troubled by Kessler, in both rounds 6 and 7 Calzague picked up the points and although Kessler still looked dangerous he was just not as effective as in the first two couple of rounds, Joe Calzague showed amazing stamina and won the last three rounds of the fight and he definitely finished of the stronger of the two men.
Calzague is now thinking of moving up a weight to Light Heavyweight by putting on an extra 7 pounds in weight and attempt to become a two-weight Champion before he hangs up his gloves. Promotor Frank Warren is urging Bernard Hopkins to face Calzague in a USA Super fight at the Light Heavyweight division. Hopkins considers himself a warrior of the ring, lets see how he stands against the might of Calzague?
