This weekend was the guineas weekend at Newmarket on Bwin.com and with near beautiful sunshine the first festival of flat racing this season in the UK threw up a couple of surprises in the two races that really mattered.

Saturday was the day of the 2000 Guineas and many people had this race down between favourite Delegator ridden by J P Spencer and Irish raider Rip Van Winkle who had Johnny Murtagh on board so many people bet using paypal for this event.

The race itself was wide open and with two furlongs left with any one of up to half a dozen horses were all in with a chance of picking up some major racing silverware, approaching the final furlong marker and it was a two horse race between 3/1 favourite Delegator and Mick Kinane’s mount 8/1 shot See The Stars which just had enough legs left to out-do his rival and win the 2000 guineas leaving his trainer John Oxx who is on some great form at the minute a very happy man this morning.

Sunday was 1000 Guineas day and like Saturday most of the betting public only really had one horse that they fancied and that was Rainbow View who was unbeaten going into this race and was a very warm favourite, but as in the 2000 the day earlier it was all about the horses from outside England and especially American horse Ghanaati who was priced at a remarkable 20/1 before the race and is trained by Barry Hills and ridden by his son Richard so at least he could be classed as half English! Irish horses completed the minor places with Jim Bolger’s Cuis Ghaire (12-1) second and Super Sleuth (33-1), trained by Brian Meehan, a length and a quarter away third with 8/11 favourite Rainbow View a disappointing fifth.
