The town of Epson became host to one of the Worlds greatest flat thoughbred horse races in the world. The Epson Derby horse race first originated back in 1779 and the name of this great horse race was decided when Sir Charles Bunbury and the Earl of Derby flipped a coin to decided whose name the horse race would be named after. The Earl of Derby won the toss, but in a twist of fate Sir Charles Bunbury won the first race on a horse called “Diomed”. The Epson Derby race first started of as a one mile long straight line race and was changed in 1784 when Tattenham Corner was introduced and the course was also extended to a mile and a half, which is still the same today. The Epson Derby horse racing begins in June every year and is the second leg of the five classic Triple Crown races, following this great race is the 2,000 Guineas and the St Leger.
