The darts could have been shortened arrows that soldiers had their students throw at the bottom of empty wine barrels. It was also said that some inventive dart thrower produced a cross-section of a moderate-sized tree which later on became the board.
Another version is that there was some sort of weapons called darts that have existed for hundreds of years as what some literary references affirmed. Strutt in 1800 claimed that the game of “Blow Point” that was mentioned in a sixteenth century manuscript was probably referring to the blowing of an arrow through a trunk at certain numbers in the manner of a lottery but then no other evidences could prove this to be as it is.
There were other games that were similar to darts. One that first appeared was a nineteenth century parlour game called Puff and Dart which used a blowpipe to fire a dart at the target. Another game is the Dart and Target which is similar but without the blowpipe.
Though all these were really just speculations, it is quite interesting to think that the traditional pub game of darts has existed for some time now and has survived into modern times, even growing into a competitive and highly enjoyable sport.
